The dragon demon Vritra
Vritra originates from a Hindu myth involving Indra, the lord of gods. As Myth and Legends of South Asia and South East Asia explains that in Indra's war against the asuras, or demons of the dark. He became enraged at discovering the strength of the asuras comes from the powerful prayers of a sage and struck the head of this holy man clean from his shoulders. This made the sage's father grief stricken so much that he vowed vengeance and created the powerful demon Vritra. Who as Myth and Legends of South Asia and South East Asia explains, "had the body of a dragon; cruel fangs and claws; hard, coppery scales; and a tail thicker than the mightiest tree"(World book) so Vritra was indeed a very fearsome beast that would soon terrorize the earth. He did this by drinking all the waters of earth, causing many living on earth to perish. Afterwars Vritra, having gained the nickname by the book, the Firstborn of Dragons, challenged Indra. But the war god lost and became prisoner to Vritra. Vishnu begged Vritra to release Indra and he did but on terms that made it near impossible for Indra to defeat Vritra. Indra, craving vengeance but respecting the terms he'd agreed to befriended Vritra, hoping to discover a secret weakness of his. Vritra, bragged about the recently recieved powers that he gotten but Indra only thought of how best to use the evening, something that is neither day or night against him and how he would be able to attack Vritra without a weapon. Indra and the devas had decided to use a weapon made from the bones of a holy man. Indra and the devas approached the sage Dadhichi and explained their plan. Dadhichi agreed to their plan and thought it better his bones be used for good. His bones were than made into the Great Thunderbolt, Indra's deadlist weapon. Indra prepared for war, drinking soma to gain immortality and divine energy before descending from heaven on a golden chariot to fight against Vritra, who was asleep in a coil. Indra awoke the dragon and challenged him. Vritra of course agreed and opened his wings to claw the god out of the sky. They fought like that for a while until Indra reached towards the sky for his Great Thunderbolt. Vritra saw how exposed he was and struck yet he was too slow and Indra struck him down with the Great Thunderbolt, causing his stomach to rip open, This caused all the water Vritra had drank to spill out back onto earth. Vritra falled from the sky.
